Welcome to March Mare Madness! This issue is dedicated to the Mares as BWP recognizes their great importance to the success of breeding programs here in North America. BWP is extremely proud of its high quality mare base. BWP foals had exciting results in the 2009 show season.
This is always an exciting time of year for breeders. You see the results of your carefully planned breeding selections of last year and can look forward to this year's breeding plans. Below you will find some of the programs and great benefits that BWP offers to you the breeder and those fabulous BWP mares!
|
| Benefits of BWP/NAD Mare Approval |
* Save $100 on registering your Mares BWP! Mares that have approval/papers from a registry recognized by the WBFSH can be transferred into the BWP studbook without inspection. The owner must pay a breeding membership fee and registration fee of only $185.00 per mare for mare registration. DNA must be provided with a case number from UC Davis. DNA kits are available through the Registrar. The DNA fee is included in the registration fee. (note: mares that forego inspection may not participate in the mare programs)
* Save $100 on registering your Foals BWP! Foals and Yearlings by Approved BWP Stallions and out of Approved BWP Mares may qualify for registration without inspection. Owners must pay a breeding membership fee and registration fee of $195.00 per foal for foal registration and $295.00 per yearling for yearling registration. Owners must also provide Four-Sided photos (front, back, left side, right side) of the foal for markings, DNA, and a signed Breeding Certificate from the stallion owner and Birth Declaration. DNA kits are available through the Registrar. The DNA fee is included in the registration fee. (note: foals that forego inspection may not participate in the futurities)
* New this year for Elite Mare Candidates! If a mare is older then 7 years of age at the time of her BWP mare inspection for breeding and receives a score of 75 or higher, she may use her inspection score towards her E-Label for her Elite Mare Status once she has accomplished all of her Elite requirements (radiographs, performance, one approved foal).
* There are no annual mare fees after your mare is accepted into one of the mare books.
* Non-BWP Approved stallions may be used with pre-approval by the Studbook Committee. The fee for Foals and Yearlings by Outside stallions is $225.
The Belgian jury and BWP/NAD Studbook Committee may request veterinary reports from owners prior to registration. The Belgian jury and BWP/NAD have the right to with hold or deny breed registration of foals deemed unfit or inadequate for breeding until sufficient veterinary documentation is produced from a reputable veterinary teaching hospital with a diagnosis for any condition that the foal may possess that states that the foal's condition is not the result of a hereditary genetic defect (i.e. condition caused by injury) | |

In the BWP there are several things that must be done to obtain Elite status for a mare. The mare must receive a conformation (E) label, a veterinary (G) label, a performance (P) label and she must have produced at least one offspring. After completing all four steps she is awarded Elite status.
For the conformation label, the mare must be presented to the Belgian jury twice between 3 and 6 years of age. The mare must be recommended by the keuring jury for an E-label (exterior) both years. If the mare is not presented two times between the ages of 3 and 6, she must have completed the rest of the Elite mare requirements before she may be presented for her E-label (see above).
For the veterinary label, the mare must submit to a thorough veterinary exam. This exam includes a physical exam, breeding soundness exam, and x-rays. The radiographs needed are of the fore feet, hocks, and stifles. The physical exam findings must be sent to the BWP Studbook Committee. If the physical exam, breeding exam, and radiographs are normal the G-label is awarded.

For the performance label, a mare must complete 2 years worth of performance requirements at the same age/level as the stallions. At that time the BWP/NAD Studbook Committee should be contacted. There must be proof of the performance either as reported by USEF, USDF, USEA or signed reports from the individual show secretaries. Once the performance reports are reviewed and accepted, the performance label will be awarded.
If all 3 labels are attained, Elite status is granted after the mare produces a BWP registered foal. |
The Select Mare program provides E-label mares with the opportunity to take a performance test instead of completing performance requirements.
Objective: An optional recognition program for mares receiving their first E-label. Designed for E-label mares that will not be pursuing the Elite Mare program requirements.

| Criteria: Mares may be BWP or other registries, but E-label selection is made by the judges during the keuring tour. Mares scoring 75 and above are typically selected for their first E-label, but the Belgian judges grant the award and document it on the score sheet. The second E-label inspection, which may or may not include the Select Mare performance test, is typically done the year following the mare's first E-Label award.
NOTE: Mares do not have to complete the performance test to get their second E-Label. The E-Label is a conformation label - not performance. This second inspection can occur by presenting in hand at an inspection
site or by video (conformation, walk and trot on the triangle).

Test: 1) Under saddle. Mares will complete the USEF 4 yr old dressage test (essentially a first level test).
2) Free jumping. Mares will free jump through a jump chute (4 yr old jumping requirements - 110 cm or 3'9") Judges may adjust the height to accommodate the skill level of the mare.
Scoring: Scores are documented for both sections of the test. Mares that successfully complete the test to the judges satisfaction are awarded their Select Mare label.

B-Olive is a BWP mare by Rio Grande out of Private Nurse xx. She is pictured being ridden by Dr. Paul Johnston in the hunt field. He is the Master and Huntsman of the Annapolis Valley Hunt. She was a broodmare from 3 to 6 years of age having Gucci by Voltaire, Evangeline by Indoctro and Frequent Flyer by Concorde. She then went into sport competing successfully in hunters and jumpers. Because she is such a joy to ride Dr. Johnston turned down many offers on her and she is now his horse for hunting. She is bold, forward going and good with hounds. Her son Gucci was the winner of the prestigious Lieutenant Governor's Cup in Canada in 2009.
BWP Elite mare candidate, Galiba by Lasting Impression out of Key Moment xx, recently had back to back wins in the 4-yr-old classes of the February 27th USEA Young Event Horse competition at Rocking Horse Stables, in Altoona, FL and the March 9th USEA Young Event Horse competition at the Florida Horse Park, in Ocala, FL. Galiba has qualified for and will be attending the Year End Championship. She was bred by Andras Szieberth, is owned by Julia Bitler and ridden and trained by Maren Foster of Waterford Eventing.
Have competition results and/or photos to share? Please send them to us, we love to brag about our member's horses.
